How to Reduce Environmental Impact of Livestock Farm in Italy

Description

The CoP is committed to finding strategies to adapt Italian livestock farms to climate change and at the same time trying to reduce the impact on the climate. In order to do this, forage production, manure storage and spreading and crop management are under consideration.

Objectives

1. Reduction of farm inputs for cultivation, focusing in particular on conservation agriculture;
2. Optimisation of spreading and storage of farm manure in order to reduce GHG and ammonia production. Of fundamental importance will be the dissemination of good practices involving the distribution of livestock manure on crops with new strategies to implement nitrogen utilisation by crops;
3. Optimisation of rations with the use of self-produced fodder at farm level;
4. In this perspective, the discussion among advisors will focus on the new climatic conditions that Italian agriculture is facing as it requires new adaptation and mitigation practices at farm level;
5. Disseminate among advisors the knowledge of Life Cycle Assessment, which is increasingly important to understand which practices have the greatest impact on the farm and guide the farmer/farmer towards the transition to less impactful choices.
