SmartSoil Hub: Community of Practice for Soil Health and Climate Resilience

Thematic Areas

Crops ManagementSoil Health and Biodiversity

Description

The ES_7 SmartSoil Hub CoP aims to strengthen the capacity of advisors and farmers to improve soil health as a key element of climate-smart and resilient Mediterranean horticulture. The community will focus on developing practical knowledge and advisory tools to diagnose, monitor and improve soil quality under real farming conditions. Special attention will be given to soil health indicators, organic matter management, efficient fertilisation, water-use efficiency, soil biodiversity, and regenerative practices that contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation. Through expert training, field demonstrations, technical visits, peer-to-peer learning and the compilation of practical resources, the CoP will support advisors in translating scientific and technical knowledge into clear recommendations for farmers. The final goal is to promote more sustainable soil management practices that improve farm resilience, productivity and environmental performance. The proposed activities include training sessions for CSAs, expert lectures, study tours, field demonstrations, networking events, compilation of good practices and advisory tools, knowledge exchange with other CoPs, awareness-raising actions, and the creation of practical resources for advisors and farmers.

Objectives

•      Develop a simple advisory tool to help technicians turn soil diagnosis into practical recommendations for farmers.

•      Carry out field demonstrations, technical visits and workshops with farmers and advisors.

•      Improve knowledge transfer to the sector through social media, highlighting the agronomic, environmental and economic benefits of maintaining soil health.

•      Create a repository of valuable resources of information

•      Identify the technical, regulatory and commercial barriers that limit the application of solutions to improve soil and communicate these needs to companies and public administrations.
