Description

This Community of Practice, based in the West of Ireland (Sligo/Letrim region), aims to strengthen climate-smart advisory by exploring practical approaches to improving soil health, biodiversity and sustainable land management.

The theme emerged from the advisors’ recognition of the need to strengthen their knowledge and confidence in assessing soil conditions and identifying the most appropriate management options for individual farms. Discussions highlighted opportunities to improve soil fertility, enhance the sustainable management of upland and marginal land, and develop a greater understanding of soil and grazing management practices that support productive, resilient and environmentally sustainable farming systems.

Objectives

Strengthen advisors’ knowledge and confidence in assessing soil conditions and identifying appropriate management practices that improve soil health, biodiversity and climate resilience.
Explore practical approaches to improving soil fertility, sustainable grazing and land management through expert input, on-farm learning and case studies.
Improve advisors’ ability to identify and recommend practical, evidence-based land management solutions that are appropriate to local soil conditions, farming systems and environmental objectives.
Investigate the potential role of emerging and innovative practices, such as virtual fencing and agroforestry, in supporting soil health, biodiversity and climate resilience, while evaluating their practical implementation across different farming systems.
