Description

This COP aims to develop knowledge on how to manage orchard systems combined with different types of grassland-based livestock systems (cattle, sheep, poultry, etc.). Each situation will be explored to better understand the opportunities and limitations of integrating trees for animal production, and animals for orchard management.

At the end, the CSA will be able to design, manage and advise a new or existing orchard-grassland project and to show how it can be helpfull for climate and resilience.

Objectives

At the end of this COP, the advisors should be able to:

Explain to farmers how an orchard–grassland system can benefit their farm, their livestock, their income, and the climate.
Present the benefits and the barriers to a successful orchard–grassland system project.
Propose solutions for implementing new orchards within grasslands, taking into account the type of grass harvesting.
Identify potential challenges and propose solutions to achieve the best balance between trees and animals.
Evaluate the carbon sequestration potential of this type of system.
