The “Herd Management” CoP aims to identify, analyze, and discuss the various levers for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the area of herd management, with the goal of developing solutions that take into account both environmental and economic considerations while maintaining or increasing productivity and animal welfare. Each CoP meeting will focus on a specific area of herd management. In addition to feeding and young stock rearing, this includes fundamental management issues across the entire farm. To illustrate these points, farm visits will be organized, experts will be invited whenever possible, and discussion panels will be held to explore different perspectives and to critically examine and disseminate information.
1. Identify the various levers for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by adjusting herd management practices.
2. Exchange knowledge with individuals from different professional backgrounds to gain insight into and understand diverse perspectives, and to adapt advisory services accordingly. Understand what might deter farmers from adopting innovative techniques that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
3. Developing solutions that make sense in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, animal welfare, productivity, and economic viability.
4. Actively applying the results of the CoP meetings in advisory work.
